A big part of Holland or The Netherlands is laying below sea-level and has to be protected against flooding. Therefore there's a protection system consisting of several protection layers. The first protection layer is usually a relative high sea dike. The second layer is a lower dike more inland. Such a lower dike can be seen at this image. At this image you can see more of our protection system against flooding. Hope it's interesting to you and that you'll enjoy this image. PS: image was captured at October, 23th, 2007.

First, your explanations in this and "Zeeland Coast (11)" are quite clear and very informative. I've never seen photos of dikes explained as well as these.
2nd, altho you say it was late October, you really caught a peaceful feeling of a late summer day. Almost domestic. Reminds me a bit of some of your Ren. painters!
And last, I love the composition: the right foreground orange repeated in the left center vine & bush, and the TWO vistas leading out of the picture, at different planes center left and right. This shot goes on forever! LOVELY!!!

A beautiful image, Cornelius, with the tree-lined road and the house on the side. The colours are very nice and the photo on the whole excellent.

Very nice image, and very informative caption. I always knew about the outer dike, but I had no idea that there was another one farther inland. The colors are magnificent. Well done.

Hi Cornelius,
That IS a very interesting bit of information. This image is beautiful, especially the road going through the lines of trees, that are all leaning. The diagonals are great. I really like the setting for that house...when can I move in?
