This image shows you three Dutch (Zeeland) old wooden fishing boats sailing on the Lake of Veere. These boats were built at the end of the 19th century, begin 20th century (1899-1902) and are recently reconstructed to keep them for historical reasons (as a kind of 'living' monument). During the reconstruction a small propulsion engine was built in as well, only for safety purposes (emergency propulsion). It's hard to imagine that fishermen had the courage to sail on them on the North Sea in the past with no other propulsion means than sails. My late granddad was one of them. He survived on July 18th, 1924 a disaster in which 15 of his fellow-fishermen drowned after their tiny boats were struck (and sunk) by a heavy storm.

Hope you like this image. Thank you in advance for your comment.

A wonderful post Cornelius! In the time these boats had no engines only the real fishermen went to sea I think. Like the great atmosphere in this photo. Very good! Mich

Excellent Capture Mr. C

The sailboats really POP in this image.
Reminded me of this SONG which really fits the laid back feeling of this capture.

Thanks for sharing.

What beautiful boats. I like the idea of restoration, although it seems extravagant to those of us who are frugal-minded. I agree with you about the sailing. I love being under sail, but I want to know the motor is there if needed to reach shore. That is a great story about your grandfather.

Great shot, Cornelius. They are fantastic looking old boats. I was wondering if they still put the red sails on newer boats. Does the color have any significance? Thanks for the beautiful picture.

Answer to Jimbob's question: "I was wondering if they still put the red sails on newer boats. Does the color have any significance?"

Initially all sails were made of linen. To give them a better protection against, for instance, the salty seawater they were preparated with a special tan (they were boiled in a stuff derived from tar giving them the redbrown colour). Newer boats got sails of a better quality, so preparation this way wasn't longer necessary.

I do like this image, as I find it very interesting to see these old style wooden, and sailing boats, with the lee boards. Also like those red sails, which were so common years ago. A great shot to keep. Sure would like to have a sail on one of those. Enjoyed your story also, thanks for both.

Beautiful "old" boats Cornelius. It's a good thing that these parts of living history are kept alive.
