The 'Grote Kerk' (Tall Church) of Veere, Zeeland, The Netherlands, was captured by me two days ago. The second name for this church is 'Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk' ('Our Lady Church'). The construction of church and tower started about 1348 and was stopped in 1521. The tower was never fully completed as it was intended to be three times as tall as it is now. The dome on its top was added after a fire in 1686. The maintenance of this tall church (tall in respect to the number of Veere's inhabitants) took too much toll of the very little town. Therefore parts of the building were given new uses in order to collect money. In 1975 a restoration was done which was aimed at preservation, not reconstruction.

Hope you'll like this image. Thank you in advance for your comment.

Like to use this opportunity as well to say 'thanks' to my friends who have voted on my 'Synchronized' image, so achieving a 3rd place in the 'symmetry-contest'. Thanks too to my friends for their congratulations by sending me a PM or by giving a recently comment on this post. Highly appreciated!

Cornelius.

A very well done capture of this structure. The clouds really give a moody feel to it. I want to also say congrats on the third place finish, that was a beautiful image.

Lovely capture of an impressive building that certainly makes a statement in the landscape. If the tower had been finished it would have been quite something :-)

Cornelius - When one considers the technology of the 1300's, a church of this magnitude is even more impressive, especially as it stands nearly 700 years later. To think that the spire was to be so tall, and the plans were downsized almost 400 years ago - this in itself is amazing. Your photo does wonderful justice to this fine church building and surroundings. An excellent capture. Thad

Wonderful, well composed image Cornelius. The Church really wanted to show how powerful they were in those days. Mind you the people of Veere are left with a magnificent church.
