Edit: Tick has forwarded a question below. Like to give Tick and you some additonal information:

For Dutch people it's very clear what the function of the 'boat garage' is (as mentioned so by Tick below). I do understand however very well that 'foreign' friends have to guess for it. Therefore I'll try to explain this to you: "It's not a boat garage. These are traditional WATERmills. Their function is only to keep the polder dry (polder is the Dutch word for a tract of land below sea level, reclaimed from the sea, and enclosed by embankments known as dikes). The 'boat garage' has two entrances, one as a waterinlet for water in the polder towards the mill (on the rear side of the mill) and the other one as an wateroutlet for water from the mill towards the 'canal' (on the front side of the mill, as can be seen on this image). Therefore the water in the 'canal' has a higher level than the water behind the dike (at the background of this image)." When the watermill is in operation (wind will be required), it turns a kind of screw. The srew acts like a kind of pump. It's a process in stages to get rid the threathening superfluous water in the polder. This 'chain' is continued until the water finally reaches a river and/or the sea. In more recently constructed polders the traditional windmills are replaced however mostly by electrical pumps.
