Raj is right with his comment. In medieval times from figure-heads of boats was expected that they would perform a certain role. One of the possibilities was that they had to stare the (submerged) evil spirits away. That's the reason why some figure-heads have a frightening look, like this one. My goal with this image was only to be funny by giving the frightened look of this figure-head another, but from historical point of view not correct, explanation.
