The Belgian Pilot Vessel 'Ravelingen', sailing here on Flushing Roads, just has transferred a pilot, in order to guide the MS 'Pacific Breeze' to the port of Antwerp.

I hope you'll like this image. Thank you in advance for your comment.

A lovely calm weather shot Cornelius. The wake of the pilot boat can be seen all the way back. Beautiful image with your usual fine composition and clarity.

I didn't realize what was involved with these large freight vessels until I've read raj and your posts - - valuable learning experience and an excellent shot Mr. C.

Hello Bob,

I can understand that the difference between 'sea lanes' and 'maritime roads', like 'Flushing Roads', is not clear to 'not maritimer's', lol.
Let me try to explain the difference:
On shore you have highways. At sea as well but then they are called 'sea lanes'. On highways you have strictly traffic rules, on sea lanes strictly maritime rules, mainly with respect to speed, maneuvering, and safety. A highway can lead to a city, parking lot, and so on. Sea lanes however are leading to a port/terminal or a road. A road is a kind of maritime parking lot. 'Flushing Roads' is such a parking lot: an area at sea located at the mouth of the Western Scheldt river, south of Flushing and off the Belgian coast). Seagoing vessels can stay there (e.g. anchoring or position/station keeping) for several reasons: waiting for high tide to enter a harbor because their depth doesn't allow to enter the harbor at low tide; waiting till a pilot is available; custom clearances; sheltering for stormy weather; and so on).

I really hope that the difference is clear now. Thanks anyhow for your interest in this matter.

Regards, Cornelius.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

What a great action shot with the wake of the boat curving right back to the other! Good explanation of 'roads' and 'lanes'...I had no idea.
