I show you this image, not because it's, from photographic point of view, an artistic one, but because it might be interesting to you. I've tried to depict the phenomenon 'below sea level threat'.

Think that you may know that most part of my small country is below sea level. We can only survive by the construction/use of 'polders'. A polder is a below sea-level lying tract of land, reclaimed from the sea, and enclosed by embankments known as 'dikes'. Because it's reclaimed from a muddy or sandy sea bottom, most of my country therefore is flat as flat can be, lol.

My picture shows at its left side, near the small building on top of the 'dike', the sea (think it can be seen only at full screen size). In the middle you see the 'dike', and at the right side you see a far lower polder. Think the image shows clearly that the 'dike' is protecting us from flooding. Dangerous, isn't it? Although it went wrong in the past (please, therefore check-out this link and this one), we got used to live this way. The story of the 'hero' Hans Brinker causes a smile on the face to the people of my country as it's a fairy tale!

PS: to get a proper impression of the size of the 'dike', you can use the bikers on the bike path as reference.

Thanks for the picturesque image and the info Cornelius. In quite a few parts of Germany we have flooding caused by rivers often and without the dikes the flooding there will be catastrophic. In Hamburg the Elbe rises every time when there is strong Northwest wind during spring tide.

I always remember those stories of the little boy with his finger in the dike to save the town!....

A great vantage point to show us the detailed contours of the land!...Leaving in the animals and people give us a size perspective of how huge this project was!........

I don't matter how much money is spent....as long s lives and homes are safe!

This is one most outstanding post, dear agent. So instructive and profound in study of the issue. Have not time yet to check the links, but will do it asap - this weekend is busy for me & even SAAB might be affected by neglect from my part... All the same I would never allow myself to miss viewing any of your images, even briefly, now that I am back to missions, however awkward some of them might have been recently...

Cornelius - Living on the edge, so to speak. Your photo portrays life in The Netherlands - the reality that the sea is always waiting to reclaim that which has been taken for humans' uses.

I sure do remember the story of the boy that saved the people by putting his finger in the dike. I can still remember the illustration the was shown to us from the book. Funny how some things stick in the mind and some things don't! You have shared with us a beautiful shot of the area, and some wonderful information, as well, Mr. C. Thank you for both.

I truly never realized that the dikes were embankments covered in green Mr. C. - this was a fascinating post including the links.

Most of the land built up to keep water out in my part of the world is called levees, SEA. They are also used to control the erosion of the soil.
A very informative photo that grabs our attention with all the lines and beauty within the frame.
As usual, you inform and entertain us with your professional quality.

Excellent reporting here agent SEA, both visually and with your informative background info...the size of the bikers does indeed enhance our understanding of the proportions and I too remember the story of Hans Brinker...well done.

In addition to your beautiful photography, you have provided us with an outstanding narrative and supplemental links as well. You have captured a vast area of your homeland and your image illustrates the importance of the lay of the land, if you will. Superb photography, Mr. C.!!!

Excellent capture, such a beautiful scene and I'd love to bike on that path. It's amazing how those huge dikes hold back the sea if a huge storm comes. I seen in full that the sea is a distance off.
