Perhaps the title of this image is somewhat strange to you, so I'll try to provide you with an explanation: at the left side of this image one can read on the sea front wall the text (when viewed at full screen size) 'Uncle Beach', with the subscription 'We will remember'.

Below this sea front wall and below the windmill there's a small beach. In WWII this beach was an assault beach, which was given the code name 'Uncle Beach'.

For detailed information, one can check-out this link, in particular the text: "The amphibious landings were conducted in two parts on November 1. Operation Infatuate I consisted mainly of infantry of the 155th Infantry Brigade (4th and 5th battalions King's Own Scottish Borderers, 7th/9th battalion, Royal Scots) and No. 4 Commando, who were ferried across from Breskens in small landing craft to an assault beach in the south-eastern area of Vlissingen, codenamed "Uncle" Beach. During the next few days, they engaged in heavy street fighting against the German defenders."

Almost near the same spot, there's a sculpture showing a fighting soldier of the 'No 4 Commando', depicted by me and posted here.

Your photo shows a lot here and then there is a windmill too , so nice. Some of these lesser known battles were very important and interesting to learn of. This took place a few months after Normandy I read , still fierce fighting. I did visit the D Day beach in Normandy long ago and was moved by it. Fine post Cornelius.

The D-Day battle came to mind instantly as I read your narrative, Cornelius. As Tom points out, these lesser known battles were ever so important. Your fine photo has enlightened my WWII knowledge and events in your country.

I agree with Tom, and Doug, all of the battles fought have brought us to where we are today. I really like the clarity of this one, once again the composition is perfectly done. tigs=^..^=

Hard to reconcile this peaceful image with the brutality of war.

When I saw the windmill in the new images gallery I suspected it came from you C. There's plenty for the eyes to see here and the upload could fit in several categories.

Call me unconventional but the people in the shot make this image most appealing to me.

What a wonderful lead taking us up to the wonderful windmill & gorgeous sky. Outstanding info and if it wasn't for the battles fought we wouldn't be here today.
