The original 'Halve Maen' ('Half Moon') was built in 1606 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. On April 6th, 1609 the 'Halve Maen' started her voyage with the English captain and navigator Henry Hudson and a mixed English and Dutch crew in order to find a safe westward passage to the wealthy Spice Islands in the Far East.

The passage wasn't found, but they did another important discovery. For the complete story, please check-out this link.

This is however the replica of the 'Halve Maen', depicted on October 22th, 2016 during a port call in Middelburg, Zeeland, The Netherlands.

PS: please notice at full screen size the crew member working in the 'crow's nest' in top of the middle mast.

Very nice shot of this lovely replica of the original "Half Moon" Cornelius. 80 ton vessel with 17 sailors and into the unknown waters ! Captain Hudson must have been a very capable seaman,

A grand vessel with banners and flags blowing in the wind!

When living in upstate NY, I was required to teach NY history, including the Dutch exploration of NY. Today, many of the people's names and the names of locations in upstate NY are Dutch names. We lived on Van Wagenen Lane, for example, named for the farm and family clan that lived on that road.

Many surnames began with "Van". Other common local surnames were Terwilliger, Hasbrouck, Voorhees, Wynkoop, Ostrander, De Witt, Overbagh, etc . These names represented many family members that spread out in the area on various farms and businesses. My husband's mother was of NY Dutch ancestry, and her maiden name was Dutch.
