I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

Let's see now... I can read Middelburg, July 13, 2017 on the spoon's handle and a painting of a horse pulling a gig past a red, white, and blue ringrijden post inside the bowl of the spoon. That's understandable, commemorating the event, but even after reading the posts on your linked images (all three of them), I still don't understand the use of a large wooden spoon, other than an object to tuck the flowers behind... unless... when the wives started joining in they chose to use giant spoons instead of lances? [oD Any clues, C.?

'Nik', I'll try to give you the answer:
In Holland this big wooden spoon is called 'pollepel'. In the past it was used for cooking large amounts of food.
Nowadays it's a traditional and symbolic price on both gig riding and tilting at the ring events. The participant who in the last turns has put all the rings on his or her lance earns this (now painted) wooden spoon. The one who wins the 'pollepel' gets a bonus as well: a bottle of gin or Dutch gin (In Holland called 'genever') and a pair of wooden shoes/clogs. The gin or 'genever' is put into the 'pollepel' and is passed to all the participants in order to take sip as a kind of 'cheers!'.
Nowadays the 'pollepel' is a highly sought after price, but in former days it was a scandal price because the participant who hasn't put a ring on the lance all day long was rewarded with the 'pollepel'. On the farms, in the past it was a common use to eat buttermilk porridge on summer evenings. The youngest servant or co-driver had to stir this buttermilk porridge with a large wooden spoon. This servant was mockingly called 'buttermilk porridge cook', indicating that he/she wasn't an adult yet. Thus, the 'pollepel' then (in contrary with the present situation) got a symbol for inconvenience or incapacity, so in tilting at the ring and gig riding events as well.
Times are changing, ☺ .

Brgds, Cornelius

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I enjoyed you explanation of the spoon SEA. Funny it has gone from being a "booby prize" to a "treasure."
Very enjoyable post.
