In Goes, a town in Zeeland, The Netherlands, at the end of August 2017 an exhibition was held, showing more than fifty North Korean paintings, made between 1960 and 2007 by professional North Korean painters. All paintings were made on behalf of the North Korean state and are originally intended for domestic use in public buildings and hotels.

Art in North Korea is not free of obligation and is always in the service of the leader, who benefits from an idealized image of North Korea. The regime uses this well-painted socialist-realistic art to create and maintain an utopian North Korea. Essentially it's the glorification of the system by means of paintings with subjects like 'family', 'agriculture and industry', 'war and confrontation', with enemies like the US and Japan: propaganda wrapped as art, very useful in the past and for this nowadays regime as well!

The paintings were collected by the Dutch art collector Ronald de Groen. Ronald started collecting paintings at the end of the 1990's together with the Dutch Willem van der Bijl. Van der Bijl, a stamp dealer, had an official office in the North Korean city Pyongyang, allowing him to do business there legally. A big collection has been gathered by means of a North Korean intermediary.

I got the opportunity to capture all the exhibited paintings, so this one is the sixth one of a series of the by me selected images for uploading to Caedes. Although the last exhibited painting was made in 2007, think that this series will still show you an unique look at the closed/isolated North Korea.

Some details/description of the sixth one in this series:

Artist: Kim Ki Ha

Title:'Police officer'. Painted in May 2003

Oil paint on canvas. I was told that it had the dimensions 68 x 69 cm. I suppose that this was a mistake, because when using these dimensions, the traffic regulator aka 'Police officer' turned out too tall. To me it was about 52 x 69 cm, because using these dimensions resulted in showing her in a more normal way. A noteworthy feature of Pyongyang: all traffic regulators are women. They regulate the traffic with 'charm' (please notice the quotation marks, because it's a facade). The painting is situated at a mall across the Pyongyang station.

This is what I think most North Koreans think their lives are like, but if they really examined their situation they would see the polar opposite.

She's smiling because she knows what hell she can put you through. How many times have any of you seen a smile of evil anticipation? None? Welllll... attend High School. Join the military. Stand in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Send your steak back to have them cook it right this time. You just might see one.

Considering that North Korea has no traffic to regulate, this vision was a stretch, to say the least. And I wonder how citizens there feel about a future that was promised, but then stolen by a family kleptocracy. Something we're in the early stages of experiencing now. Corruption and treachery aren't unique to any government, and how we arrived at a similar low point from different directions should be a lesson for all citizens. It can happen anywhere.
