In Goes, a town in Zeeland, The Netherlands, at the end of August 2017 an exhibition was held, showing more than fifty North Korean paintings, made between 1960 and 2007 by professional North Korean painters. All paintings were made on behalf of the North Korean state and are originally intended for domestic use in public buildings and hotels.

Art in North Korea is not free of obligation and is always in the service of the leader, who benefits from an idealized image of North Korea. The regime uses this well-painted socialist-realistic art to create and maintain an utopian North Korea. Essentially it's the glorification of the system by means of paintings with subjects like 'family', 'agriculture and industry', 'war and confrontation', with enemies like the US and Japan: propaganda wrapped as art, very useful in the past and for this nowadays regime as well!

I got the opportunity to capture all the exhibited paintings, so this one is the 12th one of a series of the by me selected images for uploading to Caedes. Although the last exhibited painting was made in 2007, think that this series will still show you an unique look at the closed/isolated North Korea.

Some details/description of the 12th one in this series:

Artist: unknown.

Title: without title. Painted in August 1992.

Oil paint on canvas, 96 x 75 cm.

The main message here is apparently that North Korea is a modern country, with excellent healthcare provisions. The flag symbolizes 'honesty'.

The artist is talented, but I find the lies that lie beneath so sad.

The artwork is sublime and you captured it so well Cornelius. Propaganda is a nasty thing. It has such a mean spirit behind it. Cruelty is cruelty no matter if it is wrapped up with pretty ribbons.

They had Utopia and we once had "Camelot" SEA, but a bullet fired by a coward changed all that.

It really is quite a beautiful and warm painting.
They say propaganda is an art. It is despicable.

I was reading about a North Korean ex- propaganda artist who has defected o South Korea. His harrowing story of how he was brainwashed as a child can be read here HERE

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thanks Lyn, for the link in your above comment. A terrible and touching story. I had initially some doubts to upload my 'North Korean Utopia' series, but in order to show to a certain extent the propaganda used by the regimes, I've decided to do so.
The Caedes-friends, judging their already given comments in this series, are very aware where these regimes stands for. A threatening and dangerous situation!
