Recently the liberation of the peninsula Walcheren, Zeeland, The Netherlands from the German occupiers by allied troops of Canada, France, and the UK was commemorated.

Walcheren was very important from strategic point of view because the entrance to the port of Antwerp, Belgium could be controlled there. Without the use of Antwerp the allied forces couldn't be provided with supplies. At this depicted spot in 1944 a landing action was performed. The depicted monument, showing a landing commando, is a tribute to the heroes who has given the highest price for our freedom: their live!

Let's never forget!

A fine tribute Cornelius and you have captured it perfectly. I just read the whole story on the internet. This peaceful scene saw such a different scenario back then.73 years ago !
Lives lost to save others. A reminder of the tragedy of war.

My father spent some time in Arnhem during the war.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Fine capture of this memorial to that historic event Cornelius. The "almost Nazi" party with a different name is coming up in Germany again - due to the thoughtless action by our famous Kanzlerin in letting in refugees almost uncontrolled. This has brought into the land many "economy refugees" and also criminals. That is why that party has become so strong (14%).

After the failure of Market-Garden, the capture and use of Antwerp was recognized by many to be the key to defeating Germany. Many of the coastal ports along the eastern Atlantic weren't large enough to handle the supply needs of the vast allied armies. Antwerp could handle 1,000 ships at a time. The allies did take Antwerp but holding it wasn't enough, the Scheldt, areas of sea to the north-west of Antwerp, were filled with German troops that had been evacuated from the Pas de Calais, and these men needed to be defeated as well. After that, large mine fields had to be deactivated; one hurdle after another. It was a protracted struggle, from early September 'til late November of 1944 before it was done, and it came at a high cost to the allies; 703 officers and 12,170 other ranks killed, wounded or lost in action, presumed dead, half of those casualties being Canadian. I'm glad there are monuments to men who crossed an ocean or border to help someone else, giving too fully of themselves.

We need those reminders of war to hopefully find other ways to settle issues. Of course, we don't subscribe to this.
