The title 'Mother And Daughter' is based on the difference in size of both ships. It's actually an incorrect title because the PSV (Pilot Station Vessel) 'Pollux' is a quite new vessel (commissioned on September 11, 2013), while the lifeboat 'Carlot' enjoys as a 'retiree' of her old age.
The 'Carlot' was built and commissioned in 1960 and was decommissioned in 2000. In her 40 years of service, the Carlot made 579 rescue trips. In addition, 799 people, nine cats, a dog and a pigeon were saved.
The 'Carlot' was ahead of its time because of the self-righting ability that was even further increased by the closed wheelhouse. When all the doors of this wheelhouse are closed, the 'air bubble' in the wheelhouse is such a big driving force that the boat can't turn upside-down anymore. In the tilting test with closed doors, the boat immediately returned to its normal position after 6 seconds. With open doors it took 50 seconds before the boat had directed herself.
The 'Carlot' nowadays can be seen in the harbor of Terneuzen, Zeeland, The Netherlands as a floating museum piece. However, she's still completely intact, witness her sailing presence at the rescue event in Flushing on August 15, 2018.
