I captured this figurehead of the 'Utrecht' (a ship with a medieval design) in one of the harbors of Flushing, Zeeland, The Netherlands.
It was once believed that spirits dwelt in the figureheads. The spirit guarded the ship from sickness, rocks, storms, and dangerous winds. If the ship sank, the spirit guided the sailors' souls to the Land of the Dead. To sink without such a spirit condemned the sailor's soul to haunt the sea forever.
A manic thought then, hence it's my contribution for Manic Monday (Mē).
