I have been using my Canon G11 for most of my photography because I wanted to get a new walk around lens that has IS so I can use my Canon 7D more.

So I get the 7D out to take some closeups of my little grand daughter and I keep getting ERR20 messages no matter what Canon says to try.

I read on the internet that Canon has this 'mechanical' problem with their DSLR cameras including the Mark V. The usual answer to what to do has been to send it back to the store or to Canon.

Canon will look at it and tell me what the cost of repair will be. It has to be over several hundred $$$ because Precision Camera repair quoted at least $180 for a repair on the 7D, sight unseen.

Or you can buy a refurbished 7D through Canon's Loyalty Program for a charge of $1087. I paid $1200 for this camera brand new almost two years ago!

Maybe this is what broke the auto-focus on my almost brand new Canon 50mm f1.4 lens that was hardly used too.

I'm currently re-thinking my relationship and loyalty to Canon. When you pay lots of money for a good camera, you expect it to last a little while.

Anyone here have good things to say about Nikons?

Cindy, as you might know, I'm a Nikon fan. Both my camera bodies and lenses are Nikon ones ('Nikkor' for the lenses).
I was adviced by my youngest brother, an, at the art academy in Breda, the Netherlands, graduated artist. He said to me that according his and his colleagues experiences, Nikon cameras offer the best colors. Now I have concluded that he has spoken the thruth, lol. In order to prevent that owners of cameras, other than Nikon ones, will tell me that I'm not objective, I'm in a hurry to say that the situation is comparable to cars. The choice of the brand depends on someone's personal taste.
What I can say anyhow, is that the by Canon offered service is both expensive and not optimal. Poor value for money, indeed.

BTW, a very nice image. Taken by a Canon? Not that bad, LOL again.

Regards, Cornelius.

So sorry to hear of your problem with Canons, if I were you I'd shell out money to Precision Camera repair to get it fixed as it's the cheapest option.

Rachel is a nice little motor boat, and those riverbank homes sure look expensive.

I have four Canons, three of which are DSLR's They range in age from 9 years to 5 years, and never a problem of any kind. And no, they're not top of the line. A basic Rebel 300D, a 20D and a xti, and I haven't even replaced a battery in any of them. You've been unlucky, Cindy. Have you checked the Canon site for updates in the camera's firmware (7D)?. They can have (BUGS), like everything else that's computerized.
Have your Model and Serial number handy as different updates can apply to small batches of the same camera model.

I think you are feeling as adrift with Canon as your photo shows with the boat COG.
I was a Canon user all through the 35mm days and started off with a Canon 450 as my first big DSLR purchase. I did not like the quality and sold it and went to Nikkon. I have had better luck with the Nikkon.
As SEA said, it is much like cars. I had the Canon in the shop shortly after I got it because the mother board was a wuss. I never trusted it after that.
It's like asking: Did the chicken have a Canon or a Nikkon when he crossed the road to take a photo?
I do like your shot and I like my Canon Powershot for a pocket camera.

Nikon RULES!

My D300 fell five feet and hit the bottom of an Aluminum Airboat. I cringed when I saw it fall then heard it hit. I said well, there goes an $1800 camera. The battery compartment flew open and the battery came flying out. I picked it up put the battery back in and have been shooting without a glich for the past three years. I challenge anyone to find a scratch where it hit. I have now recorded over 70,000 shots with this camera, 45,000+ since it fell in that boat. You be the Judge.

I presently have a D800E on order and can hardly wait to shoot HDR's with 36 Megapixels.

They are ALL good until they break.
I must say I know of several people who have switched from Canon to Nikon, but I know of NO ONE who has switched from Nikon to Canon.

Perhaps it's time you set your Canon Adrift. LOL.

Just One Man's Opinion.

Beautiful, peaceful shot, Cindy.
I'm a Nikon girl myself, love my Nikon . My personal opinion is Nikon produces better color and I like their lenses . Like EJ I know 3 people who have made the switch from Canon to Nikon and all seem to be very happy. I have a brother who uses a Canon however he is quite impressed with Dan's Nikon . I think bottom line it is a personal choice . Good Luck whatever you decide to do.

This is a wonderful shot Cindy. The light blue boat looks wonderful and so does the background with its nice colours. I think that both canon and Nikon have overpriced their products purely because of the lack of competition.

Nice scene Cindy - good comp. I'm coming off of a terible experience with a Panasonic Lumix product and no good support from Panasonic. I got into a Canon and I find the difference remarkably better. I used Nikon and Nikkor when I shot with film and my personal opinion is Canon is better digitally than Nikon - my brothers Nikon shots can't compare with what I'm shooting with Canon but like everyone said I also think it's a matter of taste.

You're not the First to Have complained about Canon's products as of Late... and The complaints are usually aimed at Their high end Products! I parted with Canon years Ago, and Never looked Back! I have no Experience with Nikon, but, I haven't heard any Complaints about their Camera's, Lenses, or Customer service. I will State, however; that Panasonic Camera's have been Very satisfactory to My needs! But, a Camera is Like a Toothbrush... it's Personal! I recommend DPReview to conduct Your research, and Make up your Own mind as To what will Meet your Needs... and btw... That's a Nice little Scene!

This is so weird, Cindy!!! I have a friend on Facebook who is having the identical problem. Here's what I told her:

"When I heard you were going to buy a Canon 7D, I called you, sent you a certified letter, a telegram and an email. I begged and pleaded with you. 'For crissake, Cindy,' I said, 'not the Canon 7D. Try the 6D or the 7E.' But did you listen. NO, you did not. Will you ever learn to listen to your elders?" and then "Cindy, when you first met me, I was an 80 year old woman named Dorothy; so don't get smart with me, youngin'. Smart alecky kids these days."

$1200. Wow. I wish I had your kind of money.

Did you shoot this as a long distance telephoto? Most of your images are so sharp that I have to wear gloves and a mask when I'm viewing the images. This one seems a little noisy and not nearly as sharp as I'm used to seeing from you. I suspect that you got bird flu in your camera when you were shooting the baby robins. Try a course of antibiotics before you dump the camera.
