after a hot day in calgary thunderstorms are almost guaranteed. there were 3 or 4 thunderstorms all around my neighborhood, but most only lasted for about 10-15 minutes and this was one of the last, thankfully i was able to get a good picture. sorry about the trees in the way, but it would have been somewhat inappropriate to climb on somebodys roof methinks, even if it would've been fun

Wow, what a great shot Carl. I like the stars you have caught in this and the lightning illuminated supercell is spectacular. Trees do not detract at all:-)

Great shot. Looks spectacular and you have the balance in exposure between the lights, stars and lightening just right. Not easy - well done!

very nice, and very strange. I did not hear or see any rain, lightning or thunder last night. Very very strange. Must have been to submeresed in my studing or splinter cell.

10 just for the amazing timing of this shot! It's really beautiful and I have it as my desktop at work. It's rare to see the complete view of lightning, including the light at the tops of the clouds, etc. REally beautiful.

Climbing the roof... it'd be a story to tell. It would've been nice to have gotten to see the lightning hitting the ground but... the cloud does look amazing.

I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings: And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill. That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes. We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not. Yet so the universe was wrought . Thought is another name for fate. Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.

Fantastic shot. Did you set the camera up on a tripod and shut the aperture right down and left it on a long exposure? How long for? I'd love to give it a go, but here in the north of England we just don't get the extremes of weather like you...

PS - You could just as easily add the stars in after in Photoshop - no one would know!!

hey, i had the camera on a tripod. i was using bulb exposure, so i held down the shutter until lightning stuck. i had about 50-60 duds, or very weak shots for this one that turned out. the stats on this one are 4.6 seconds, f/4.5 iso 250 at 48mm. i shot raw, which helps very much with lightning because i white ballanced and used a different curve for both the lightning and the background sky. by the way, i did slightly enhance the stars in photoshop. they were easy to see before, but i wanted them to be unmissable because i think maybe people dont look for too long here :P

Now I know what this reminds me of - when the alien spaceships are entering the atmoshere in Independence Day! Taking 40-50 duds - that's dedication to your art, alright. I think it's perfectly acceptable to "enhance" the important bits of photos, hell, that's what all this new technology is for, to make it possible to recreate the bits that we see at the time, but are just outside the capabilites of the camera to record.

Knowing me I may have been up on the roof if I hadn't tried that already. It doesn't help with that distance, I couldn't clear the trees in the shot I tried like this. I didn't have the success in clarity that you did either though. Wonderful capture.
