Unfortunately this image is very noisy. i guess thats what happens when you take a 30min digital exposure. the northern lights are quite prominent, and i appoligize for the CCD glow that developed in the top left corner

I love this type of shots. Yea, it's grainy, but that doesn't take away the cool feeling from the capture. That glow in the corner is a similar issue. (Someone with more PS experience might know what you could do about that. I'm not sure I could handle it that well.) I won't lie to you, it would look better without that upper left corner, but the rest of the piece makes up for it. I love the composition you have used and the bold colors that came out of this experiment.

I love these star trails. Carl, I would take it through a noise reduction such as Neat image. To get rid of the glow, simply take your color picker in Photoshop and select the color you want the glow to appear as. Now that you have your foreground color, take a large (150 pixel) soft edged brush. Set the mode to color and paint over the glow. That's it. What ISO do you use to take these?

I have not seen a long time exposure for a while. Thanks for posting. So what if there is noise. It is a good photo.

i noticed you are located in calgary, was this taken there? i tried to shoot these too. mine were really noisy as well, i heard from somewhere on my canon rebel xt that there is a mode that processes the photo in the same time it was taken for, which somehow helps reduce noise greatly. maybe your camera has something similar. i cannot wait to get up to my cottage in Bancroft ontario to try it out.
