Possibly no other house in Concord, MA has a greater variety of historic associations than The Old Manse. Built around 1770, it housed the Emerson family when "the shot heard 'round the world" rang out a few hundred yards away at the old north bridge, April 19, 1775. It served as home for the Emersons, Hawthornes, and Ripleys for nearly 170 years. Henry David Thoreau planted a garden as a wedding gift for Ralph Waldo and Sophia Emerson.
