At this time of year ships head east along the St. Lawrence Seaway toward the Atlantic to avoid the winter freeze up that would imprison them till Spring. This one is passing under a raised train bridge. The vehicle bridge further along was built high enough to clear the ships but if you stand on that high span of the bridge you could safely jump onto the upper deck of larger ships. At least it would be safe if you didn't miss. The shrubs on the left occupy an extremely long island that separates the Seaway from the St. Lawrence River. It offers a great path for cyclists who don't mind putting in some miles.

Hello, Edwin, You've shot a fascinating subject here with an interesting narrative. I just love the grungy look of the old bridge and the immense ship. Don't see anything like that around here. Extraordinary detail on all of the ties and bridge support structures. There are lines everywhere. Makes you wonder how somebody figured out how to build a suspension structure like them. The overcast sky fits the subject and your description of the ship escaping the impending freeze. Everything about this posting looks cold and forbidding.

What state is this? I remember seeing a bridge very similar to this in Illinois. I stood just a mile or so down from it.

The location is just south of Montreal, Canada - not yet a state although American forces did take over Montreal for a while in 1775, and Benjamin Franklin came up in an effort to win hearts and minds. He even founded a newspaper which to this day is Montreal's main English newspaper. However the absorption thing didn't work out, the Americans gave up on the project, and returned home. You never know when they might give it another whirl, though. :-)
