I am a figurative artist, and I have to say that the coloration job is to Escher's discredit. Had he used color he would have with more skill than this displays. The color is flat and hastily done. There is no variation to the skin tone. The red veins in the eyes are left black and white. The reflection in the eye as it crosses over the iris is colored blue. Any reflection that crosses the eye sits on top of the eye, not semi-transparent. This is amateur work over a master illustrator, draftsman and artist. I am sorry I don't mean to sound so critical, but if your going to add to the work of an old master, try to do a decent job at least.
a bit disrespectful, in my opinion. i agree with what matthew said; who are we to try to 'enhance' the works of a genius? had he wished to colorize it, he would have done it by now. but color just disrupts the way of this drawing, it's hidden message, and he saw this too..

i absolutly love this. i, as a artist, cannot get past eyes when i try to draw faces, and this caputres their simple defiance of everything normal in a way i could never do, great job

This MC Escher illustration was shown as a poster in the movie "Donnie Darko." The poster hung in Donnie's bedroom...(The character of Donnie was played by Jake Guyllenhaal in 2001). The movie revolves around Donnie who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who became extremely symptomatic after escaping death, when by some quirk of fate, a jet engine broke away from a commercial airliner and fell into his bedroom during the night. Since Donnie's condition caused sleep disturbance issues, Donnie just happened to be sleepwalking on the local golf course the night the jet engine crashed through his room....Great cult classic!!!...Must see!!
P.S. I love all of your work Mr. Escher!! Everything you've done is nothing less than inspiring!!!........ (to say the very very least)!!
I definitely prefer the original in this case - I find this colouring draws my eye outwards, _away_ from the focal point, rather than inwards as I think the image demands. And this isn't as subtle as the colouring for the earlier Escher piece posted.
Probably just me. It isn't that there's anything really wrong with this. I just find it less effective and less attractive than the original myself.
