...returning from my walk back towards the canal - you can see a longboat in the distance. The canals were built during the 19th century and were used for freight tranfer. The longboats are a more recent development mainly for leisure. They have been built long and narrow in order to navigate the canals and locks.

Lovely composition and clarity Patti. The lighting is very nice and the long boat must be in for the night as well. Great post and thanks for sharing it.

This is a lovely setting Patti, just remember this picture the coming winter, if the weather is bad, and then view it again, dreaming of summer in the cold seison can be heartwarming. For now, i am not in luck this month, nealy no sun, rain daily.
Otherwise i would have taken an evening walk as you have just done.
Great image, and very nice scenery.

Regarding your subject, i remember a documantary about the industrial revelution,
the canals where digged in that time indeed, but you say that the longboats date from further on in time, as i understood that documantairy, they used the long boats for transfer even in that time as well, they where towed by horse, and that explains the paths along those canals. it is very simmular to what we have in holland, only the type of ship differs in width a little.

you are right Hans! they called the boats barges then - there are lots of names for the boats - barges, canal boats, longboats, houseboats - it is a bit confusing :) and yes I forgot all about the boats being pulled by horses originally - thank you for the history behind these boats :) Patti

What a well-composed photo, Patti - 'pretty as a picture". Wait, it IS a picture! And the boats in the background make it interesting as well. Fascinating info on those. Sure glad you went walkin' the other night! - Patty

I really like this distant view of the longboats (I'm truly fascinated by them.) Your composition is very pleasing and your new camera is doing you proud! My only comment would be to align the posts of the fence with a slight rotation to the right.

As I studied this composition and contemplated your title, I was focusing more on the post than on the history of the long boats...then I went to your link to the information on the history and the story of their place in transportation, and found that fascinating as well. Thank you for adding that :) But then I turned back to the picture again. At first I was struck at how monochromatic it was, but Pat pointed out to me that it was taken at dusk, so what I'm seeing here is the scene filtered through that soft light that come to us in the twilight of the day. As I moved my eye back toward the boat and then the sky, I was reminded more and more of the crepuscular filter that prevails over all of this very soft and charming take. Nice post..informative and tranquil. :)PJ

I really like this one Patti! Right down to the gate in the foreground! The landscape colors look great against that sky! I enjoyed the link to the info on the boats too! Those look really nice! I can see myself on a two week cruise in one of those! All the comforts of home. Nice post Patti; ya done good kid! lol C):-)

Great capture and thks for the PM on the explantion of the longboats. That was really interesting. I see what you mean when you say the canals are everywhere. What a way to travel. I think it is neat-o. I failed to catch what country these longboats are in...
