...and I need them so Pat thinks! lol! This little fellow (and not really that little come to think of it - he was about 5 inches/13 cms long) took residence on a trellis just outside the villa door in Spain - my niece woke me from my siesta to tell me I had to come photograph him - and guess what - he was still there late the following day, so I managed to take lots of pictures of him. Eventually he disappeared back down the trellis into the plant at the base and he was impossible to see - the camouflage is amazing. This shot was taken from the side with the green landscape out of focus in the background to create the silhouette.

I've looked at both your images, and I prefer this one because of the clarity of the insect. I like the angles in the other, which contributes to the composition of the take, but this particular view shows off the insect with nothing to detract. The clarity needs not be spoke aloud as it is clean and crisp and points up all the details and coloring this big guy has to offer. Now, please do me a favor and find a phasmid to photograph....there's a challenge for ya :))))) PJ

How beautiful you make a praying/preying mantis look! Amazing. What a soft image, yet in clear focus, what a careful job to blurr the background for us...outstanding.

Reminds me of a kindergarten teacher I knew who found a sac full of praying mantis eggs outside her home. She took them to school and tacked the egg case to the bulletin board, after having passed it around for the children to admire.

The next Monday she came to school and found her classroom FULL of tiny praying mantises!

This is very good work Patti. The detail of this closeup is perfect. I followed the growth of one of these guys in my garden earlier in summer. I could not seem to get a good shot of him when he was little...was waiting till he was full grown like this one but lost him before I could get shots. This type of bug, Mantis, has always intrigued me...thanks for posting...gerry..
