...this is a folly built on a hill in Lyme Park Cheshire. Hans posted one recently and asked if I could post one too! So here it is. There are actually two in Lyme Park and have little or no purpose than to be a small building built for the pleasure of the owner - meaning just because he felt like building it! It is too small to serve a purpose! I took photos of my daughter looking through the two holes that appear as windows from one side to the other and she took one of me on the steps which you are not seeing! ;) more like a fool on a hill than a folly! lol! hmmm ps I have added some history below.

I thought he built that for an ex-wife.........put her in and lock the door. LOL That's a purpose isn't it. :-) Nice job Patti, I meant that in jest so please dear sweet honorable and loving ladies of Caedes don't come to my front door with torches burning and rope in hand, I'll hide anyway. LOL :-)

Naw - it's for mother in laws - great narrative about this Patti, I had never heard of one or seen one. Now, why not the other picture that you were talkin about. I really like the way you captured the shadows of the trees on the right.

LOL at John's comment above..and relates to it! LOL So this is where the word folly comes from? Interesting indeed! It's a cool little building..would make a neat yard shed to store my tools and lawn mower in! How much would shipping be from the UK? LOL hmmm..*wonders what the neighbors would say waking up one day & seeing a folly in the yard* C):-)

..some history behind this folly. It is called 'The Lantern' and stands in the grounds of Lyme Park . Building of the original manor which stands in the park was started in 1517!! yes! not a typo that is correct! The land and the manor were owned by the Legh family for 550 years. Ownership transferred to the National Trust and became open to the public in 1946. The 'Lantern' folly you see here was built in 1732 and another one which I will post later, 'the cage'. They were built so that the ladies could observe the deer hunting in the park! ps and no Jerry the Cheshire Cat does not live there! lol! but there is a ghostie! I will save that story for another time! until then.......
