I was having a so so day Saturday, until I stumbled on this Heron hunting in a field. It lashed out suddenly and pulled a Gopher out of its hole. It took a little time for the Gopher to expire, but eventually the Heron swallowed the rodent and a huge lump traveled down the bird's neck.

Better than the Orchid man right Garret. Great shot my friend. I love it when you capture nature in action.

It looks like a mole Garrett. The make really good hunters it seems. I thought they were on a fish diet strictly. I guess they need a little red meat from time to tome.

What a action packed capture. Wonderful work.

This is a great stop-action photo Garrett. I need that heron in my yard....we have moles everywhere. We could keep him going all winter. My neighbors would borrow him as well! Great detail for a stop action shot. To my favorites this goes!

Right time, right place.

Lucky day for the Heron, but an unlucky day for the mole :o\

I know....C'est la Vie...., but still.

Great action shot:o)

What a sight! Fantastic catch for you both. They are so much fun to watch when they hunt for food. Wonderful details on the heron and the gopher. Nice change for me to see them in a field.

Garrett, this is wonderful. It is nice to see one of these beauties with something other than a fish. Great capture.

You guys, it is not a mole. It is a gopher. If it was a mole
I would have ran out and taken it away from the Heron myself.
Moles are very infrequent. For the record a mole looks like
a torpedo. Huge upper body, wimpy lower body. They dig close
to the surface and lift the soil as they dig (huge upper body).
Hence the mole trails that they leave behind. They are also
gray or charcoal color and have disproportionately large front
hands.

Garrett

Oh, also check out the tail. Moles have a nubbin for a tail. I am
glad that I stimulated your comments though.

Great shot of a gopher, don't see any in these parts. Nice of the heron (great blue?) to show up as well.:)
Wonderful capture and nice detail.
