Often heard but seldom seen, the Spotted Towhee is a fairly common bird in the hills surrounding Los Angeles. For 8-9 months of the year, Spotted Towhees are usually heard and only ocassionally seen scampering in the undergrowth of the Chapparral. Toward the middle of January they are not only heard, but also seen atop bushes staking out their territories and attracting mates. Throwing their heads back and opening their beaks wide their distinctive twitter can be heard over and over again. I personally think that they are an extremely sharp looking bird, as birds go.LOL

I was curious as to how the Spotted Towhee sounded so I listened to this. I don't think I have ever seen one of them even though I used to watch the old western series The High Chapparral. :)
Beautiful shot Garrett.

Very nice photo and thanks for the information on this bird. Plus it is the best time to see birds they seem to ignore humans in the per-suite of a partner and there colours are at there best, great capture.

Great details and coloring on this bird. You have a good eye and lens for spotting these in the trees. Great post.

You know, Garrett, I've seen this bird in Montana a lot, and never knew what it was called. Such a gorgeous birdie, and his colours are so grand. I love the photo you got here. The way he is in the tree. I will enjoy keeping this photo.Verena

Once again, incredible details and beautiful DOF here, Garrett! I don't think I have ever seen this species before. It's black head looks like velvet and it's other colours and markings are beautifully rich! I also love the red eye! Outstanding! Saved & faved.
