I think that Hummingbirds are amazing creatures and that it is so special when one lands nearby and holds its ground. The Little General is one of those fearless individuals. He vigilently defends his territory from any and all intruders. In my case I was able to set up about 15 feet away from one of his favorite perches. He would busilly buzz off on one of his missions only to return a minute or two later uneffected by my presense. In the animal kingdom there are two principle types of color; pigmented and structural. Irridescent color in a bird feathers is an example of structural color,( or the bending of light like in a prism). When light does not strike the feather properly the color appears black or gray, but when the light strikes just right it is bent and apears irridescent green, magenta, blue, yellow, etc. This image exemplifies the light striking both ways.

I see what you mean about the light affecting the feathers Garrett. I especially like the color around his neck. Excellent clarity.

Oooh ... nice. :o)

Your photos are exceptional, Garrett. Make no mistake about what is to follow.

As I do have an observation, question of sorts for those to comment below me ... as I am not sure if my monitor needs a recalibration on a couple of fronts ...

The area of the hummingbird's face/part of the neck just below ... appear a tad darkish to me and on my monitor.

Some, being the operative word ... details in the shadows seem to be blocked a tad. Mind you, and on that note ... kind of, sort of ... the bird's eye is readily visible. So ...

What say yous?

(/\ Hope you don't mind me posing this on your image's page here.)

That said ... love the composition of your photo. A strong element in and of itself. Great colour. Nice bokeh.

Very ... very ... nice. :o)

Thanks for sharing this one with us.:o)

The short answer is that it is a cloudy day and the ambient
light is uniform. While this is very beneficial for most of
the colors and details in the image, it doesn't sit well with
the black. The black wants a direct light source to illuminate
its detail.

This is in combination with the structural color of the bird's
feathers. Notice that the feathers in question below the neck
are slightly raised and consequently absorbing light differently
than those to the right or left which are more flat. With a
Hummingbird and its irridescent structural color it is all about
light.

Wonderful capture of this Hummingbird & they sure are definitely amazing. It's always nice when they stay still for a moment or two. I have heard of pigmented color in animals / birds ... but not the structural type (though I'm familiar with bent light). Quite interesting I might add.

To help Les out ... I see what he is talking about, but on my monitor that area is displaying a tad bit more detail. The eye looks fine to me, except a little dark ... maybe towards the bottom of the eye. What I think I'm actually seeing is a reflection of something in the Hummingbird's eye. Hmmmmm ... maybe not.

A very nicely composed shot Garrett. Great colors ... I especially like the irridescent green & red.

Edit : Thanks for the additional info above. I'll take lighting conditions into consideration the next time I'm out with camera & see a hummingbird.

I have to agree with you on they sure are amazing creatures, they are very aggressive little birdies. I've seen them attack other birds if they get too close. He's really a beautiful fellow, we only have the Ruby-throated hummies.
