This Red Tail Hawk has the tell tale red tail of an adult, but a couple of other characteristics tell me that it is about to begin its second winter. Its sere (fleshy part above its beak) is still a blue gray in color and not yellow. In addition, its eyes are more yellow than brown. If you look closely its eyes are still very pale but some brown is beginning to filter in. Its eyes will continue to darken as it ages. This may even be the bird that I photographed last fall as a first year bird. Pretty cool if it is. It did not seemed bothered by me as it sat in a tree about 75 feet away from me. Maybe we are old friends.......

I spy with my little eye...Love the pose, Garrett. Would be interesting if it was the same hawk as last year. I liked the info you provided on how to determine their age. Better to have him as a friend.

Stunning shot, Garrett.

Absolutely ... stunning.

So as to not cheapen the words placed here, I did take a look at the highest resolution size for any telltale signs of ... erhm , 'something'.

'Cause I forgot what I was looking for once the image was opened up. :oP

Love the lighting, and most certainly kudos on the technical fronts ... details abound in the 'shadows'. Love the shot.

And he/she does have her/his eye on you..

Thank you for sharing this one with us.

+favs for me.

That is a grrrrrrrrrreat pose on the part of the bird. Nice exposure for being among dark leaves.

You have really captured the power that this hawk has. Doesn't look too happy that you took his picture though.
