Very illusive

I have been trying for years to get close to a Belted Kingfisher, but to no avail. Usually by the time I see one, I am too close and it takes off. When I see one in flight it always lands way off in the distance. This past Friday was a special day and one finally let me get within range (50-100 feet). Here she is... An interesting fact about Belted Kingfishers is that they are an example of reverse sexual dimorphism..... meaning the female is the more attractively colored than the male, and.... the male is the one that sits on the nest.

Congratz on capturing this little Kingfisher... They really are so illusive, I know, I can't get anywhere near them myself.

What a great shot of this guy! Never heard of him so I had to look him up on line and what to my surprise..he lives in my area yearly! Heck, now I'm going to have to hit the nature preserves more in search of this bird.

You hard work paid off on getting a shot of this bird. The clarity and details are just perfect.

Way to go!! I have never been able to get a close shot of one either! They are lots of fun to watch and to listen to, but so hard to capture on film! You really nailed this one!

Maybe they started the women's lib movement years ago Garrett. Your persistence paid off. What a great shot. Spiked look and all.

She's great! Excellent timing with loads of details. I feel a bit better now, chasing them (with the camera!) with crazy results... lol My new favorite bird photo! Thank you for sharing her.

A terrific shot, Garrett, and well worth the persistent effort. Excellent camera work and composition. With that punk hairdo, this is the cutest bird I've seen in a long time.
