Hippos are usually seen in some sort of body of water ( lake, pond, river, etc). Being grazers they must leave the water to eat grass. This guy might have gone a little to far from its main water source and had to settle for this mud puddle until darkness when it could return to better accomodations.

Great looking capture of a lot of lady's dreams of a free mud pack lol and you capture this scene very nicely .The detail and natural colours are superb and very good composition plus I love the light in this capture too.

Very well done, you handled the lighting very well, at least he/she found the mud hole, thank goodness. Tigs♥ =^..^=

A rest stop along the Serengeti Highway.
Good clarity on the eye. I can see the sun shining on its back creates a little wash out, which is ironic in a mud hole, Garrett.
You did a great job keeping it to a minimum.

I do like hippos and this is a lovely happy hippo in the cooling mud.
