Took this shot this afternoon at Nature Preserve outside of city. He was along bank of pond and I was excited when I spotted him as I had never seen species before. I am not quite sure what he is...I got home and looked up in bird book, and from what I can gather is a Green-backed Heron. If anybody can confirm this I would appreciate it. It says in field guide that this bird is a small short-legged heron, compact with a dectively long neck. Found in all freshwater and many saltwater habitats..generally solitary. I hope to go back and try and get better captures of him.

Have no idea either what the is Gerry but you've certainly captured him with wonderful clarity and composition. He's got great colors and this is certainly a keeper. So glad you shared him..go for more nature walks ;)

Herons are very lovely creatures and are usually very unapproachable. But you can occasionally get close shots of young immature birds for they have not learned to be as cautious as the older wiser adults. I like the colors of this fine bird and I like his surroundings as well. Nature preserves are marvelous places and I'm always respectful of the natural habitat. They are there for the preservation of those migratory birds and other animals. I love to visit them. Thanks for sharing your shot with us.

Well, well, what a wonderful capture of this beautiful bird. Love his eye. Can't say that I have ever seen anything like this around here and our swamps are full of birds. What a sharp capture. He has beautiful colors. Congrats on a bird well captured.

Yes, this appears to be an immature Green Heron. Good capture! Unusual, too.

Very nice, Gerry - he's looking a bit stunned by your presence. Good compositon, too.

Wonderful shot Gerry. I like the color and the reflection is so perfect it's hard to tell it from the real thing. Very nice!

You captured yourself a great image of this beautiful Heron and you got the name right as well I believe. I'd say all in all a job well done.
