Early part of this past week we had summer temperatures and a lot of critters were coming out of hibernation at Nature Preserve. Then by Thursday cold front came in and we have had winter temperature since then. I caught this common Garter Snake sunning himself and gave me a chance to use my macro mode on my lens. This was shot with Nikon D50 with Tamron 70-300mm lens set at Macro mode with tripod. Shutter at 1/320 aperture at F/8 and ISO at 800...image has been enhanced in editor..

I know they are harmless and I had some living under my front porch, but since I was a kid, I was put off by things that slither. LOL. Even so, this is a great closeup of one of those helpful garden creatures.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I appreciate the shadowy background. Lends a bluish black coloring to this coiled fellow. The pose and intense eye you've captured are superb.

Nice close up, I was picking up sticks in my yard, and almost picked up this snake, scared the hell out of me, went to get my camera, but he was gone. Great detail you got here.

Had to comment...garter snakes make wonderful pets...worms are easy to get for them to eat...I have a red rat snake now, and he is such a pretty reptile! This is SUCH a good shot of his face and body...the color and clarity do "him" justice! Thanks for sharing...Bill.
