The Hill of Tara holds great importance to the Irish. It was here that the High Kings were crowned, and it was a Celtic place of importance for centuries. Irish legend has it that it was here on the Hill of Tara that Patricias, later to be known as St. Patrick, came to request from the Pagan Celtic kings he be allowed to teach the Gospel, plucking a shamrock off the grass and using it's three petals to explain the Holy Trinity. Since 3 was a very significant number to the Celts, they allowed Patricias to spread his word. When one visits the Hill of Tara today, this statue of St. Patrick greets them as they enter. In the background you can see a Neolithic passage tomb known as the Mound of Hostages, the door of which aligns with both the Spring and Autumnal equinox.
