This image was taken at Yangshuo, China. Yangshuo is the endpoint of the Li River cruise leaving from Guilin. Our night time excursion was viewing cormorant fishing. At night, our boat left with the fisherman and his ten cormorants. The boat set sail on the Li River in complete darkness, after which the cormorants, with strings tied around their necks, were released onto the river. They dove and dove into the water in search of fish, which they would try to swallow, but were prevented from doing so by the string around their necks. The fisherman would then pull cormorants who had caught fish out of the water and force them to regurgitate the fish into a basket. Watching the ten birds rise up out of the water and then rhythmically dive back in was hypnotic and truly an unforgettable experience.
