I clearly remember sitting in my 5th grade classroom when another teacher came running into the room exclaiming that the volcano had erupted. I remember that night watching the images on the television. Since then I have watched many documenteries on the eruption and the destruction it caused, fascinated by the sheer power of the sleeping giant. Nothing however came close to seeing this place in person. Thirty one years later and the trees still lay strewn around all the surrounding mountain sides for miles- the landscape is forever changed in an instant and yet, nature still has a way of coming back to life.

Beautiful capture of the volcano against that blue sky. Let us hope it remains calm forever. So many natural disasters all over the world Kim - floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes etc.. It is beyond the power of man to contain nature's fury.

I remember that happening, this is a excellent capture showing us the resting giant. My poppa was born in Washington really close to this.

I too remember seeing it on the tube, Kim. It was so interesting and sad at the same time. I like your shot very much. So clear and the colors are beautiful. You can see the earth starting to rebuild with the shades of green.
Excellent post.

Excellent shot, Kim. The foreground images do a great lead-in job.
Cropping the sky by almost half will appear to increase the mass of the mountain substantially, with no adverse on the sky.

Wow. Still a blasted landscape. It takes many years for the land to recover from a natural disaster like this. One can look at photos before and compare them to your photo and see just how much of the mountain was blasted away. I was a long way from 5th grade back then--26 years old and about to be married. I also remember a cousin was flying to Alaska when this happened and the plane had to divert rather than fly through a cloud of ash that would have damaged the jet engines and likely brought it down entirely. She did watch it through her window, though, and said it reminded her of photos she'd seen of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs going off. A good clear photo, Kim... quite descriptive with the debris in the foreground.

I remember Spirit Lake at the base of the cone, gone forever now. It was a gorgeous little alpine lake, surrounded by miles of verdant forest. Maybe that's why some people wouldn't leave and died in the blast - life wasn't worth living if it couldn't be lived there. Anyway, it was their choice, as it should be.

To me, one of the most interesting pictures of this mountain isn't even a photo and it really got me fascinated with rendering. The image was created with Terragen 2 software, using DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data taken by laser altimeter on satellites. The clouds, snow and vegetation are all digital texturing laid over the heightfield model created from the DEM files. You can see it and others at the TGD Gallery.

I see this beautiful mountain almost every day. It was weird the last time it erupted I saw it out the back door of my house! Seeing that huge column of ash going up for miles is something you never forget. Beautiful capture of this temperamental old mountain;)

You're right, it'll take a long time to 'come back'. Having said that, nature has been busy and has 'all the time in the world' to finish what it started. Pity we'll not be around to see it. Great shot.
