This black squirrel is one of many who come to visit our back deck each day for their daily peanuts. We also have those cute little red squirrels and they chance the black ones around because the reds are the boss. Captured this while we were having our coffee this morning.
We had 10cm/4in of snow fall just this morning not including this afternoon. I know that's not much snow especially for us, but it sure was coming down. It's that heavy stuff, but makes great snowmen, lol

Ohhh, why can't we all just get along? ;oP I don't recall ever seeing a black squirrel before. This is what I found out about them:
The black squirrel occurs as a "melanistic" subgroup of both the eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel. Their habitat extends throughout the Midwestern United States, in some areas of the Northeastern United States, eastern Canada, and also in the United Kingdom. The overall population of black squirrels is small when compared to that of the gray squirrel. The black fur color can occur naturally as a mutation in populations of gray squirrels, but it is rare. The rarity of the black squirrel has caused many people to admire them, and the black squirrels enjoy great affection in some places as mascots (Gooooooo Black Squirrels! Fight! Fight! Fight! Get the ball across the line with all yore might!) Melanism is a development of the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin or its appendages (fur, hair, etc.) and is the opposite of albinism.

If you've ever wanted to make a difference but found it hard to believe that one person could... check out the Kiva Team Caedes discussion thread and discover that anything is possible.
I didn't even know that there was such a critter as a black squirrel Pat. This is an informative capture for me. We just mostly have grey and brown squirrels here.

There are black squirrels around my moms area and I love to see them - cuter than the normal grey ones I think but not as cute as Richie's Little Red - well taken Pat and please please keep the snow up there we've had enough.

Hi Pat, I was reading some of your comments above and surprised to hear that many of our US friends are not acquainted with the black squirrel, tho' I'd expect that in the UK or Europe...they are quite numerous here...in fact, I think I see more black squirrels than gray ones here in Toronto and very seldom see the reds...anyhow, a sweet shot, Pat...poor thing looks cold and hungry.
