My 6-month old son and I were taking a nap in our hammock while camping this summer...until we were awaken by this along with my wife screaming as she saw it scamper toward us. It fell into our hammock out of a pine tree in Tennessee. Around 3-1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. Nothing special about color or surroundings...just thought a spider nut might enjoy it.

Ohh, and I forgot to mention. Notice what I can only assume is an egg sack it's carrying with the front two apendages.

It's now 6 years later and I now see this one from the first time. I agree that spider bites are not fun, particularly from one this size, but I'm also sure that it would have avoided you as much as possible if it could, preferring to protect it's egg sack instead. Considering the size it could be a wolf spider. They grow rather large and often have striped legs like this one. Interesting capture (I've never seen one carrying their sack before) and good focus, in light of the fact that this is from 2007. I'm guessing the mp on your camera was between 5 and 8. -Nik
