we pulled off highway 89 and drove west across navajo grazing land. we figured that if we drove far enough we'd have to "bump" into the grand canyon. this is what we found. when you approach it the way we did, just got out of the car and walked to the edge, you are stunned at how huge it is. it goes forever and every part is big. how to photograph the grand canyon is another matter. we did not plan our arrival time. it was hazy and damp and as we were leaving, it started to drizzle. it was just one of those lucky times. i do look forward to finding a different road and a different view. but in the meanwhile i have the usual too many shots!

You have outdone yourself this done girlfriend! We too, love to pull off the main road and find those beautiful hidden treasures..in your case, it was a big treasure! Nobody does pretty like Mother Nature and what a tribute to her for, of all days, Mother's Day!!
Everything looks awesome Jen, the colors, the capture, the composition, the striations (can you tell how much I love rock striations?:)
The river looks so beautiful as it flows through the rock of the canyon.......
another image well done by you my friend. Thank you for sharing it with us :~)
And......Happy Mother's Day to you!!!

Great shot, Jen. It is an awesome spectacle. And no real way of showing it's true immensity. This gives you a good idea, why there are so many climate changes, from the rim, to the floor.
Nice job.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that you got off any roads or hiways and just drove across pasture land? If so, what a find. Also, very brave. When you looked over the edge, you must have about sank to your knees. The variety of colors is stunning. I know what God said to Himself, when he created this, "The kids will love this when they find it."

Superb capture, gives a whole other personality to an often seen image, a very tough thing to do with such an iconic subject. This is one of those photos that makes me say, "THIS is the kind of photograph I'd like to take one day."

We've been away for most of the last 3 weeks and I've just been looking through your postings. This one stopped me in my tracks. I love the Grand Canyon anyway, but you've outdone yourself in this image. I am especially impressed with the way you have been able to capture the colors in the canyon all the way down to the blue water in the Colorado River. Usually shadows are so strong there that this is very difficult if not impossible to do. Great work!

Ah, very nice. I visited the canyon in 1992 and I'd love to go back someday. I didn't get any photos as nice as this unfortunately. I heard that when the first Europeans found the canyon they estimated that the river was 8 feet wide :D. Shows how wrong you can be. Awesome.
