PLEASE VIEW THIS ONE FULL FRAME.... in the last picture (2 palms) keep in mind that i'm walking to the horizon. okay that was the view on the right side of the road. on the opposite side of the road there is a lava wall and these plants grow all over it. if i go by early the flowers are open. they are spectacular. the one on the left is probably dying. surprisingly they are in the cactus family. this is the only place i've ever seen these flowers. for a couple of years there weren't any. i guess they were all pulled out. but now they're back!

Wow...these are really weird but pretty flowers. I have never seen these so this is a real treat. It really touches my foofy side. Very nice shot and well presented.

I've never seen these either. Must be the 2 or 3 I missed. It looks like a flower is growing out of the flower. Is it a pest or is it just not liked, a weed?

Jen, you've captured this most unusual flower very well! I've seen cactus flowers growing in lava in AZ but nothing this spectacular! The detail on this is wonderful! - Patty

What a beautiful and unusual flower Jen and you've captured it with perfection. Hard to believe that something in the cactus family grows in Kauai (that is where it was I believe) since it is so moist and humid there. The clarity and composition here is wonderful and thanks for the post. It does look awesome full screen.

Truly different. Do they have a sweet smell to them? They look like they do. Very educational commentary along with the photo. Nice.

Never rebuke while you’re still indignant about a fault committed—wait until the next day, or even longer. Then calmly, and with a purer intention, make your reprimand. You’ll gain more by a friendly word than by a three-hour quarrel. -Josemaria Escriva

It is amazing how much cactus there is in Hawaii, especially on the Big Island. I don't recall ever seeing them in bloom. Great capture.

i'd agree with jackie's comment. who would believe something so fragile and beautiful would be the product of something so rugged and ordinary like a cactus. very nice capture here
