Off the tip of Sandy Hook, NJ, is the oldest working lighthouse in the country. It was designed and built in 1764 by Isaac Conro. The light was built to aid mariners entering the southern end of the New York harbor. It was originally called New York Lighthouse because it was funded through a New York Assembly lottery and a tax on all ships entering the Port of New York. Sandy Hook Light has endured the occupancy of British soldiers during the Revolutionary War and exposure to the elements on the end of Sandy Hook. Sandy Hook Lighthouse is part of Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, NJ. When the lighthouse was first constructed it was quite close to the water. the drifting nature of "the hook" caused sand to build up, thus the greater distance between lighthouse and ocean.

Wow that's a piece of history, great job Jen. I like the older buildings, they have so much more character. IMO

Lighthouses are soooo cool!! Nice place...a wee too much foreground and not enough tip to the structure. Also, yup there's an also...it's a wee bright in the whites...those darn bright days!! Still, a superb structure!!

Well, I'm glad you didn't take this down until I had had a chance to look at it. Just great and I love all the history behind it!

Wow, not only is this a beautiful shot, but I am impressed that there is no 6 ft. chain link and barbed wire around it. I really like lighthouses and it irks me when you can't get within several hundred yards of them.. I really like the architecture of the associated building. It has that pre-Revolutionary War look and here it appears to be in the very best condition. Thanks for presenting this, Jen and thanks also for the background history.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

"The Hook" is only about 20 minutes or so northeast from where I am...Didn't know you were in my neck of the seashore...Excellent capture!

Looking at Gogle Maps, I can see what you mean about the sand build up. It's closer to the bay than the ocean. Lovely capture. Looks like a good place to visit sometime. Thanks for the view.

I was looking through your gallery and saw this. Great lighthouse shot. I'm becoming a big fan of lighthouses since visiting the Marblehead Lighthouse on Lake Erie in Ohio.

Nice shot, I volenteer at the hook several times a week and I've never seen a better view of the lighthouse then on this picture!
