the highlands were unlike any place i've seen. the plant life was so different. i don't know what the dark red/brown plant is but it's everywhere so were the gold and silvery grasses. maybe it will change color in the summer. it was quite cold and we encountered snow. enjoy! thanks so much for comments and suggestions.

Hi Jen, very nice picture of the highlands. The dark red/brown plant you see is something like heather or how you call it. In dutch it is called 'heide'. The Highlands are really wonderful!

It is the heather Jen...it has been burned off in 'strips'!...they do this periodically to promote growth, and make more vegetation for the wildlife..

Excellent shot too....Yeah, some snow lasts 3/4 of the year up there!

This is a great scenic photograph Jen. The Highlands are breathtakingly beautiful provided the weather is good.As a boy we used to live in Dunblane in Perthshire. It used to call itself "The Gateway To The Highlands" and we would go out for great long drives up into the hills and mountains.

I'm so glad you were able to capture this scene so well. It's lovely and I enjoyed reading the above comments, except for the first one, of course.

Heide is translated in English as heath.

The red/brown plant the grows everywhere in Scotland is

HEATHER (scientific name: Calluna vulgaris)

Yup, heather. Bob said if I had come up later in the year, that heather would have been all different colors. Wouldn't ya know it.

what a strange picture. Al those patches on the mountain, amazing place. And then look at the trees. They are tilted. can it be that this photo is not levelled out or are all the trees left handed?
Fantastic place, I have to go there soon!
