"Sandstones, chiefly the De Chelly formation of Permian age, laid down more than 200 million years ago, compose the canyon walls. The reddish hue of the cliffs varies in intensity with the time of day." look waaaaay down into the horizontal crack where the wall meets the floor. these ancient homes called pithouses (part of the home was dug into the rock) were built between A.D. 350 and 1300. the people who lived there mostly farmed on the canyon bottom....................................................things have gotten pretty busy here so i have had a hard time making comments. i'll be viewing your images and probably voting. please forgive me for not writing to you about each of your wonderful images........................as for this one, thank you in advance for your comments. ENJOY!
