Fishin' is what one would like to do or should be doing on a nice day. The chimney in this photo with the wooden structure built on to it is from before the Rapid City Flood in 1972. The chimney sat there by itself for about 34 years or so and then when they redid the park they added the covered picnic structure to it . The island in the middle of the lake use to sit out all by itself and the only way you could get to it was by boat or over the ice in the winter. The flood caused great damage and took 238 lives. Here is more information on it if you would like to read more about it - http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-037-02/pdf/fs-037.pdf

I recall the flood very well Jodie! A terrible day in SD history for sure! I was actually at a camp in Northern MN when we got word of it. Some of the kids at the camp were actually from Rapid so you can imagine how it affected them. I dont recall if any of them lost family or not. Anyhow to your pic.; it does look like a very nice fall day! What a peaceful scene this is! Terrific colors and great clarity! Great history of the chimney you gave too; very interesting! Nice post Jodie!

Very informative, if tragic, information provided by the link you gave us. What a difference in the scene then and now. Your capture is very pretty with the brilliant fall colors and the now peaceful water. Looks like the effort put into reclaiming this was well worth it. :)PJ

It is a beautiful and peaceful scene. It is a wonder how nature could change that peaceful scene into a tragedy. Thanks for sharing, Karl :o)

Mother Nature has a vast amount of beauty but in a twinkle of an eye she can remind us that there is also an ugly side to her. I would imagine it’s a lot like the different moods in all of us.
As to the image before us, what can I say that hasn't already been said?
This is truly an amazingly beautiful image.
