We have arrived at Devils Tower National Monument now. Hope you have enjoyed the trip! If you look closely you will see two small white dots near the left hand top of the tower. These are climbers that were making their way up the monument that day. I followed them in my binocs. for some time. The one struggled a bit to reach the top from this point, but after guidance, (& probably a lot of encouragement..lol), from the other finished the climb to the almost 1300 feet high top! ............................................................................. Indian legend has it that 7 little girls were playing near here & were chased by some bears. When the bears were just about to catch them they jumped up on a rock about 3 feet high. One prayed to the rock to take pity on them & save them. The rock began to grow upward pushing higher & higher! When the bears tryed to reach the girls they scratched the rock, broke their claws, & fell to the ground. To make a long story short, the rock kept growing higher & higher until it reached the sky. The girls are said to now make up the constellation "Pleiades" which in the winter appears right over the top of the monument. When you see the tower now you can still see the bears claws lying around the bottom turned to stone!

Ok, now wait a minute Dan, I don't think I have ever seen this of a close up. The rock formation in this tower is really weird. Putting all Indian forlore aside, what really did cause this, does anyone know? Great capture of the tower-again. This is another keeper for me.

A wonderful close-up Dan. It's just amazing how grand this rock is. Excellent clarity & I don't think I would ever try to climb it unless there's a bear chasing me. LOL!!! I loved your narration as well. Excellent work.

Now this is a keeper of a shot Dan- The blue sky is amazing in this and I also like how you framed the top with the branches of the tree. What an awesome photo when enlarged - such great detail of the rock. Go Dan!

You got a excellent angle on this and to be honest I dont think you could got a bad angle if you tried. This capture is a very good shot. The sky didnt turn out very well though. However it isnt that bad and the formation kinda takes the looker away from the sky. I just love that rock formation. Into my favorites it goes....Thank you

I'm used to seeing the distant views, Never seen an up close and personal perspective like this. I think it's even more impresseive at this angle against the sky. From here I can see the geology of the rock face itself and if you look hard for the climbers calculating the size can be dizzying. I even like your branches in the shot, they keep me firmly grounded.

What you are seeing at Devil's Tower is the interior column of lava from an extinct volcano. Over the ages since it died, erosion has peeled away all the soft material. The vertical chunks of granite occasionally come loose and fall off but, when I was there last September, the rangers told me that the last time that happened was about 10,000 years ago.

WoWzer - that's an awesome view! Thanks for the helpful info - That is an interesting Indian legend. At the bottom of this Devils Tower, it does look like giant claw marks. You took this at a perfect angle-neat the way it curves up to the sky. Speaking of sky, this one is gorgeous! Thanks for all this history Dan :*>

Great narrative ... and I appreciate that effort as well, thanks for the information.

This ... this is the one that I had seen in your galleries that is absolutely intriguing. One of the strangest and most interesting land formations I have seen.

Add in the contrasts of colours of that incredible sky serving as a backdrop for the tower ... nice.

Good composition again. The touches of branches coming into view fill the spaces there well. I think it would appear too barren without them.

But this one is alll about the "Devils Tower" and you certainly did this landmark justice with your shot here. Great perspective.

Thanks for showing a part of the world and some of it's geographical anomalies that I wouldn't have otherwise seen. Nice work.
