Nope..wasn't a barn behind yesterdays antique tractor photo! This is an old rural grade school in McCook County,SD; about a half hours drive from Sioux Falls. Many of these still dot South Dakota's landscape. Very few are still in use & many have been converted to houses or used for one thing or another. That is not the case with this one as you can see, as it slowly begins to fall apart. Pigeons are about the only thing in attendance now days. Maybe it was just the wind, but as I was taking these shots I could have swore I heard kids laughing & playing. ;-)

Nice shot. Very interesting, Dan. I did assume it was a barn. Very cool information you have shared. Again, a very rustic capture!

You've managed to turn a timeworn structure into a very well composed image. The detail of it's sad condition is clearly shown full screen. As for the children you seemed to sense? ... what a wonderful thought to leave in our imagination.

You sure had me fooled Dan. The setting for this photo is just perfect. So sad to see the school in shambles though. I bet it would look great fixed up as a house if one had the time and money.Who knows, it may have been the "ghosts" of children that you heard. Anything is possible. I love this shot Dan- it's just so beautiful.

go to the back of the class Daniel for misbehaving and having us believe it was a barn!! ...and write "I must not confuse my Caedes housemates" 100 times. lol! Well joking apart, I can just imagine now all the children playing outside the building. Lovely image! Patti

Dan, this is such a cool, old schoolhouse - you "kidder" you! :)) You may very well have heard them; are you sure it wasn't groaning about math though? I'm going to enjoy this image on the desktop often! - Patty

Very good shot there Dan, I'm sure a many a child had a ball of fun in that school yard and it's really not surprising to me you heard laughter, even if it was the wind.lol Maybe?? Thanks bud for sharing I'm a firm believer in the past and the values that got us where we are today.

Fooled me! I thought it was a barn. We had these one room school houses in NE too. I think the kids learned more when they had all age groups learning together. They learned from each other. Maybe you did hear what you thought you heard. Where do sounds go anyway?

A great shot Dan ... lot's of history there. I would have never guessed it to be an old schoolhouse. I still see them in my area also ... most are used for something else, then other's stand empty, or were torn down. I believe you when you say you heard childen playin' & laughin'. I once lived in a house where an old school house once stood .... I swore I heard the same. Thank you for sharing ... great job.

What a cool shot Dan. Every little wrinkle shows. The clarity and depth is perfection and if one closes the eyes, no telling what can be heard. Excellent post. Thanks for sharing it. Anita

Ah ha! Kidder had an ace in his pocket. He baited me and I bit. Not a barn...ok...I see that. Boy, do these two old things compliment each other. Can you imagine the conversation that goes on (after midnight) between the old school and the old tractor? I'll bet they know all about each other. Excellent, Sir Kidder!

Well, you had the wool pulled over my eyes too, but I still say that the structure and the old equipment look like they've been together so long that they've taken on the same hue...sorta like ppl that are together so long they start to look like each other...great job on this caputre, BTW :)PJ

So its a school not a barn. DAMN. I like the array of materials used in the erection of it. seeing the full building you can the age of the building and it too has seen better days and is in need of some TLC. Great work

I actually went to first grade in a schoolhouse like this (NO, I'm NOT that old, although I am Kidder's older sister! Six grades in one room-3 of us in first grade. So, I too, can hear the shouts of laughter of the kids at recess. Love the old tractor in the foreground, Dan. Great shot. Sad that this history is decaying.
