This old abandoned gas station is all that remains of Pumpkin Center,SD. Once a small thriving community, it is now nothing but a spot along the road. It is located on what once was US Highway 16,(now SD Hiway 42) at one time a major East-West route across South Dakota & the U.S. With the completion of Interstate 90 less & less traffic was traveling on this road. That brought about the demise of several small communities and many small businesses (like this place) that depended on travelers for economic survival. Decided to include the piece of hiway in the photo since it was part of it's history. Thanks so much everyone for all your visits & comments!!

Oh, I could hug this pic..and I'll tell you why...when I saw the title I groaned..oh no, someone already has pumpkins....then I saw the pic and I was so happy it was just a dilapatated gas station :) How's that for reverse psychology? Very interesting history. Glad you posted it... :)PJ

Dan, black and white was the perfect choice for this and I do like your composition, with the highway. This 'yesteryear' gas station could probably tell a few tall tales if it could talk. Shame it has given way to more bustling places. Thanks for sharing the history behind the image. - Patty

Ahhhh the vanishing American frontier, sad to see it go Dan but some people would tell ya that's progress. I dunno just typing on this computer tellin' ya my thoughts is progress that I like, some of the rest of it though I think I could do without. Thanks buddy for the look back.

A great shot Dan ... the B/W suits this perfectly. I know what you mean by dying small communites ... they do whatever they can to survive, but sometimes it's not enough. It seems you are seeing more & more like this. Thanks for sharing Dan. BTW I use to live a mile off US 16 (Minnesota of course).

Very nice capture Dan and I continue to like the B&W. It's sad to think about the things that progress did to some communities while making others thrive. Very good post. Thanks for sharing it with us as well as a bit of history. Anita

Hmmmmm, looks like a great hobo hang-out! :) If I were a teen living near here...I'd be breaking in...and making it a club-house to skip school in!

Those kinds of things are sad to look at and the b & w really sets the mood for this.

It's a kind of sad reminder of the community that once inhabited this area. I think they should demolish it Dan - I am sure the sight of it must make people sad. Well done in capturing the mood by posting it in B&W. Patti

Awwww....you can almost image what it would have been like to see it in it's day! Great shot...lots of emotion in here...and the b/w really adds to the feel of it! As always, great work friend!

This reminds me of so many gas stations that have closed around here because of progress moving into town. It just looks so sad sitting there with people passing by it every day as if it's invisible. The B&W just conveys this feeling Dan.Very good work here.

This sort of thing happens more and more these days with the building of by-passes and I think it is a same for the towns. this is a nice capture of the old servo.
