I haven't ever really photographed people and profiles but this month's uni photo society competition is "People", so I had to give it a try. This is one of the shots I took of my friend and edited a bit. Comments and criticisms welcome! Thanks.

Pretty shot of a pretty gal - there is a bit of a focus issue though. DOF maybe? - I noticed her shoulder seems to be fairly sharp -

So many pics and so little time can mean just one thing - it must be - tee time

Sharpest focus is about midway on the shoulder strap so I expect you were shooting at maximum aperture. Nothing wrong with that in portraiture but the eyes should be your primary focus point. Depth of field will uaually handle most of the face with acceptable softness. It's still better to stop down at least 2 stops(usually a lens's optimum aperture, as you can always soften digitally in editing.
Dead center positioning is generally not the best and reduces impact. A crop of the left border, almost to the body will give you the general idea. In this cae, even cropping half the head, accentuating the eyes, makes quite a difference.
It's still a nice shot but mor typical than impactful. Play around with many crops and see the myriad variations available.

Good capture, although I'm not sure what's up with the yellow lighting at bottom right? And - the image could have been sharper. Otherwise, very, very nice!

Like everyone else focus and dito for the yellow light...maybe bring the light between camera and subject. Try a focus on a spot where subject nose and cheek meet. On second look balance yellow to both sides of subject and maybe a little higher. Good capture.
