Charles City County, Virginia, USA. Welcome to the Hill family's Shirley Plantation. When Elizabeth Hill, of the third generation at the house, married John Carter, eldest son of the Robert "King" Carter, the wealthiest man in Virginia, the fortunes of the Hill family changed, leading to the construction of this house. It's interior woodwork is extraordinary, as is the flying staircase. All of the furnishings of the house are Hill family possessions. Understandably, interior photography is not permitted. So, enjoy this view of the house, the magnificent large magnolia tree on the left, and the oak tree on the right that is over three hundred years old. Walk to the river side of the house, where you might see some bald eagles soaring over the James River. The bench on the porch looks inviting as well.

Very nice, Thad.

Love the pristine look.. of the house, setting and that of your photo here. Sharp.. detailed.. well-focused.

Wonderful natural colour, too.

Adding to the above.. the sharp diagonals of the shadows cast across the front of the house.. underscore the angles and lines of the architecture of the house itself.

And..

But, of course.. thank you for sharing this one with us. :o)

----Welcome to the Hill family's Shirley Plantation----

But I see no one there Thad, lol.

I think that this mansion was built there because of its beautiful location. Thanks for an other well documented post my friend.

I like your composition of this shot, Thad, with the big trees on both sides, and the mansion standing there looking so proud. Excellent sunlight and shadows, which would make it a contender in the contest.

A beautiful setting along the river puts me in mind a little of Mount Vernon along the Potomac - love the stately look of this.

So this is how the other half of the other half lives.
What a view they must have.
They surely have a magic carpet to go with their flying staircase.

I'm always a fan of well-captured symmetry, as you've done here, and with that lake or river to the rear I'll bet there's a bench by a tree back there, suitable for sitting and viewing or reading. What a great place it must have been to live.
