Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. As a guest of Mr. Jefferson, he would take you on a tour of the lawn, with its numerous gardens, and his 'pet trees' in an adjacent wooded area. He selected 160 different types of trees to plant on the mountain. Standing among the 'pet trees', we are looking southwest to Montalto, a larger adjacent mountain. Jefferson purchased the land on this mountain in 1777, with plans to build an observatory at the peak, though that plan never materialized.

That would be a grand spot for an observatory - I wonder if he laid out the architectural plans for it? A brilliant image Thad in composition, color and quality of detail as well another interesting and informative narrative.

All right, an observatory might make a nice addition, but all the same the place looks awe-inspiring. One cannot have everything.
This is a wonderful place with all those pets that don't do any mischief by running away for instance:)

What do you give a man that has everything? Obviously a seedling and an Observatory.
Good one Thad.

I would love to turn back time and get the tour of the gardens and trees!!! Beautiful autumnal image Thad. The mountain would have been the perfect location for the observeratory. Nice work!!!

I hope he had the forethought to plant native species of trees, but I doubt it. A good view of the gardens and mountain, Thad. Nice autumnal colours in the photo.
