Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. After a quiet summer at the milkweed plants, yesterday there were nine monarch caterpillars, of varying sizes, voraciously chowing down. When they emerge from their chrysalises, it will time for them to begin the southward migration. 100 mm macro lens used for this photo.

The best use of a milkweed that I've ever seen. I've never seen the migration in person myself, although I have seen photos and video of this phenomenal natural event, but I guess they have the right idea to migrate somewhere warm for the winter, from Southern California to Central Mexico.

This will be the first (left end) of the caterpillar-to-monarch images I'll snag to create the finished collage. Neato.
